Class Description and Prerequisites

All classes have 10 or less students.  Each has his/her own computer
Classes are held for two hours once a week for four weeks 
Each class has one instructor and 2 or 3 coaches to help
Cost  is $25 per course and includes a class workbook*

IMPORTANT:
With the exception of PC Basics1,
Students must have easy access to a computer,
preferably a PC, running WindowsXP,
so that they can practice between classes.

PC BASICS 1:  Prerequisite:  None.  Are you thinking of buying a computer or are you still having trouble finding the “on” switch or just having problems operating your PC.  If you answered “yes”; come and learn about hardware, software and how they work together.  Our classes all have 1 instructor and 2 or 3 coaches to assist. This class covers, “hands on” practice using the mouse and keyboard, opening and closing programs, creating, saving and printing documents and much more.  Come and have fun learning new computer skills.

PC BASICS 2:  Prerequisite:  PC BASICS 1 or Mouse Skills.  A comprehensive overview that combines lecture and hands on experience to introduce participants to the world of the personal computer. Students will become familiar with the technology and jargon of personal computers. We use Microsoft Word to demonstrate the various concepts.   At completion of the course you will be able to understand the primary operations of your PC, and be able to accomplish basic tasks and get an introduction to file management.

MANAGE YOUR PC::  Prerequisite: PC BASICS 2 or permission. For the more advanced student. Some of the topics are: Tailoring your desktop, maintaining desktop icons, file management, backing up, system maintenance tools, downloading and installing a program. An abundance of reference material is included in your notebook. We are currently using the Windows XP operating system Though the techniques can be applied to Vista, or Windows 7. We prefer that you have your own Flash (Jump) drive to use for the backup in lesson 3.

EMAIL Prerequisite: PC BASICS 2 or permission.  Email is one of the most popular tools used on the Internet and is used to communicate with people throughout the world.  You will practice sending, receiving, forwarding, replying, deleting and saving messages to and from fellow students in class. You will learn to create an address book, create, organize and manage email folders, send attachments including pictures, copy and paste text and use the spell check.

INTERNET: Prerequisite: PC BASICS 2 or permission.  Learn to navigate or “Surf” the World Wide Web using power searches that find information that you are looking for. You will begin with learning a bit about Internet Service Providers (ISP), web addresses (URLs), using Favorites and search engines.  Internet Explorer will be used to visit a variety of search engines for research on unlimited topics including information for travel, shopping, news, maps, finding people, health information and other topics that may interest you. 

WORD PROCESSING 1:  Prerequisite: PC BASICS 2  or permission.  Add to your knowledge of the most popular  word processing program, Microsoft Word. Get an understanding of Word basics, including creating, formatting, editing, saving and printing a document. You will have hands-on experience  cutting, pasting, copying, numbering, using bullets and checking spelling and grammar, changing type fonts and size.  You will learn to format, align, indent and edit paragraphs.

WORD PROCESSING 2:  Prerequisite: Word Processing 1.  This course follows Word Processing 1 and will cover setting tabs and using tables, page numbering and page layout, and using the thesaurus.  You will learn how to use clip art, use mail merge to create labels and a form letter.

PHOTO ELEMENTS 1: Prerequisite: PC Basics 2 or permission. Ownership of Photo Elements  5.0 or 6.0 or 7.0 is required. Learn how to easily edit your digital photos like a pro with Adobe Photoshop Elements. You will import pictures from a scanner or digital camera. You will crop, enhance, resize, remove red eye, make color variations, and remove an image from photos. You will also learn how to organize your photos in files to make them easier to find in the future. This class may run an extra 30 minutes if necessary.

PHOTO ELEMENTS 2: Prerequisite: PHOTO ELEMENTS 1.   Ownership of Photo Elements 5.0 or 6.0 or 7.0 is required. You will learn to the purpose of layers and how to use them. You will learn about filters and how enhance a photo by using eyedropper, brush, smudge, painting, clone stamp, magnetic lasso and magic wand tools. You will also learn to enhance, retouch and restore old photos. You will be able to print, save to disk or email your enhanced photos. This class may run until 3:30 pm if necessary.

PowerPoint: Prerequisite: Word Processing. PowerPoint is a Microsoft program frequently used to make visual presentations. You will learn how to make slide shows with templates or from scratch. Covering such topics as formatting slides, adding charts, tables, graphics, special effects, printing, templates, and much, much more.
